Considered one of my favorite issues to do in Rome is sitting at a restaurant on the piazza, sipping on a spritz, and watching Italians speak to one another. Their palms transfer simply as rapidly as they communicate — a form of conversational dance. I used to be consuming gelato once I realized that a few of these gestures truly imply one thing: A brand new pal twisted their index finger into their cheek while saying “che Buono!” which means “It’s so good!” I quickly found there’s a gesture for nearly everything: being scared, telling somebody to not fear, spaghetti, and (in fact), some ruder ones. Whereas I nonetheless battle with the language, studying gestures together with the phrases has made it just a little extra enjoyable.
